Brent, my manager, helped devise a really great training regimen and I was ready to go. My parents were initially concerned. I sat down, and the first hand I play is with Liz Lieu. I literally turned down the best job offer received by anybody in my entire law school. I was getting really into it, reading all the books, learning a lot, and understanding that there were some definite strategic elements to the game. No sports betting, blackjack, or any other casino games.{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} I've started two different companies, when I was 18, and again when I was I was day trading in college. But I couldn't afford to play otherwise, and I had to play. So now obviously I have the nuts with my quads. Rousso: [Laughs] That was how I made some cash last summer. It's really nice, and a great place to hone your skills as a tournament player. So I put up 15K and had 10K in shares out. The 25K at the Bellagio was coming up, and I really wanted to play it. I have dual citizenship. Her hobbies include bluffing the opposite sex and Dance Dance Revolution. I grew up in Paris until I was 10; my father's French, my mother's American. She checks to me again. I'd blinded away about 2K in chips, but out of the 50K starting stack, that's not much. Bluff gets lucky and scores a date with the hottest thing on the felt, Vanessa Rousso. I'm very persuasive that way [bats her eyes]. Calling time here became a strategic move. That was my first major tournament. I'm definitely your type-A personality go-getter. I know people usually call time when they want someone to fold a hand, so I figure, with the nuts, this may be a tricky play. So that really got the bankroll started, and got me wanting to play even more. Since I was 18 at the time, I wasn't legal to play in casinos; so I played online. It was a difficult decision to turn it down, and it was a risky decision. The only way to represent this is to overbet the pot. It was quite the hustle I had going. I know this because I had been looking at my watch. Rousso: Exactly. Missing the early levels was actually optimal for me. The funny thing is, before coming into that tournament, Liz was, and still is, my biggest role model. As soon as the dealer says that, yes, she has called, I say I had quads and flip over my cards. I started playing all the time. I trained really hard for it. So I came up with a scheme. I feel, with pocket twos, she would slow-play her boat, and so at this point, I am putting her on a flush draw, or possibly a weaker queen. At this point, my bankroll was such that I could justify playing in a 10K event, but not a 25K event. Here is where the controversy comes into play. We have put it in the past and moved on. There's just never been a perfect fit. Liz now thinks for a full four minutes. By no means did I slowroll or act with any disrespect. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}She graduated valedictorian of her high school and turned down a high-flying law job to play poker. I've always had my own style with everything I do. I didn't realize that I had class the day of the event, so I literally had to book it to the airport after class and fly to Vegas. I didn't play in any events except for the Ladies' Event, which I cashed in. That was a lot of fun, because I got to know some of the pros. As much as I would love to sit in a cubicle and read documents for gross amounts of money, it's just not fun at all compared to what I'm doing now. I took a break from poker last fall, and really concentrated on my second year of law school. You can't win the tournament in the first levels; you can only lose it. I was like "different. She checks to me here, and rather than bet, I decide to check behind, and check-call the river. It just never worked out for me, though. Beyond poker, I don't gamble at all. I've since spoken to Liz, and apologized for any misunderstanding during the hand. I took the summer off and went out to the World Series. I was very into playing down to two players and chopping. She hadn't met me before, so to her, I could be someone who had no clue how to play the game. I've always been eccentric and quirky. I had great offers, and I was supposed to intern at one of the firms this summer. I guess I'm very much self-taught. I graduated valedictorian of my high school, out of about people. I have A-Q in the cutoff, and it folds to me. Rousso: OK, here's the abbreviated biography. They thought that poker was gambling. The turn is a jack. Rousso: Well, you have to understand the type of things I have turned down. The flop comes out Q-Q-2 with two clubs. I've always had the utmost respect for her; she is a very skilled player, and to be honest, I was very intimidated that she was at my table. The river is a queen. How did you attain these dizzy heights? This analysis all happens very quickly, and I immediately go all-in. That's when I started studying poker. If you ask most of the players I play with, they will tell you that I am very friendly and fun at the table. So, out of the four hands I am putting her on, two of them are now beating me. I primarily played the sit-n-gos, and would sell the chips. Rousso: It's very simple. Bluff: Vanessa, tell us about yourself before poker. I decide to reraise her 5K to 10K. I majored in economics and I specialized in game theory. She thinks for a while and then calls. But after the WPT win, it didn't make sense for me anymore. I made it to the Bellagio by the third level. Due to my inexperience, I don't realize that she is calling my all-in by doing that; I have to ask the dealer whether or not it's a call. But I made the decision that poker would be an asset for me down the road, and if nothing else, a great story. I really like to stay out of trouble early. I did, however, play in Aruba, and cashed in one of the lower buy-in events. I played probably 10 to 20 tournaments a day on PokerStars for a month leading into the Bellagio Event. I had to explain it to them. Rather than saying call, she takes one chip and throws it into the center of the pot. The last thing I would want to do is piss off someone that I have so much respect for. Rousso: It's funny, because I've always begged for a mentor, but never could get one. When I want to do something, I always find a way. The only hand she'll call me with if I bet out now is a boat, and I figure that the only way I will get a call is if she thinks I don't have a queen. It would be ideal to have another woman in the game guide me, like a Jennifer Harman perhaps. It's funny because I'm blonde, and I'm an average girl, but I have never really done what the rest of girls my age did.
